Message of Solidarty with KOPA (Korean People's Action Against Investment
Treaties and the WTO) in connection with Global Resistance Day, October 20th
Dear Friends,
This is to express heartfelt solidarity with the day of resistance against
globalisation, planned to be held on October 20th, on occasion of the Asia
Europe Meeting in Seoul. We here know about your plans for global resistance
on this occasion, because we received a copy of the impressive solidarity
message which you have sent in support of the people arrested, detained and
beaten up by the Czech police, when they staged their day of global
resistance against the annual meetings of IMF/WB on September 26th.
We were moved by your spirit of internationalism, and warmly hope it will be
returned with equal force by progressive organisations worldwide, when you
stage your day of global resistance on October 20th!
Korean workers and farmers for a considerable number of years have already
been in the forefront of the international struggle against the injust
policies of the WTO, the World Bank and the IMF. It is wellknown also, how
forced deregulation of financial markets in South-East Asian countries,
including South Korea, at the behest of the IMF, has had devastating
consequences for your country's economy in the aftermath of the 'Asian
crisis'. Surely, the holding of the Asem meeting in Seoul will be a fine
occasion to highlight the negative impact of the socalled 'structural
adjustment measures'and globalisation on your country, Korea. I sincerely
hope that the mobilisation and resistance planned by your broad and militant
coalition will be a grand success!
